Come learn the ancient art of raqs sharqi (bellydance) this class is an introduction to the basic foundation of the movements associated with this alluring and sensual art form. Shimmy and undulate your body in ways you never thought possible. Bellydance is a movement that is welcoming to all body types and skill levels.

Bellydance is a dance form that has roots in Arabic, Turkish, Lebanese, and North African culture. It is a gender neutral expression of body awareness and grace. Come learn the basic foundation of a movement vocabulary which will open your dance expression to a culture and awareness not found in western dance technique. Please bring comfortable clothing that allows for free torso movement and bare feet, hipscarves help demonstrate torso and hip articulation but are not required. We will cover the Egyptian shimmy, 3/4 shimme, snake arms, hip drops, undulations, and basic foot patterns. This ancient dance form can be easily incorporated into your social dance experience.

Biography

Tanya has been studying the art of dance movement since a young child. She has trained with Ballet Hispanico, the Martha Graham Company, the Dalia Carealla Dance Collective, Jehan's Goddess Dance, Yasmeen El Quahia's Rakkaset Al Layla, and many others. She has performed bellydance in multiple forms in Arabic night clubs, Turkish restaurants, Lebanese hookah bars, festivals, halfway, and showcases in the tri-state area for 5 years and was a featured performer for PEX's Russian Roulette showcase in 2013. In addition to bellydance she can often be found performing gogo and stage theatrics for underground events and burner fundraisers in NYC.
